Luxury's Descent

Luxury's Descent

What compels somebody to spend a quarter of a million dollars on an excursion to visit the wreckage of the RMS titanic that’s been sunk for over 100 years?

What kind of superiority complex, vanity complex, or outright boredom is required for one to dish out $250k, sign a million pages worth of waivers, some of which mention the word DEATH several times before getting to the "sign here" section, just to cram yourself into a claustrophobia inducing capsule and vanishing into the deepest depths of proverbial underwater hell? Not the first-time rich people have spent money on something that seemed foolish to us regular hard working mere middle classmates and I'm almost certain it will not be the last.

I can think of plenty of things to spend $250k on. Rewarding more fulfilling things. In no way shape or form am I trying to make light of the Titan Sub tragedy, nor do I wish to dismiss the catastrophe as anything other than a devastating and unfortunate situation. Rest in power to those lives that were lost.

The point of this article, however, is simply to pose the question. What is it that actually invites somebody of wealth to spend such an exorbitant amount of money in something that seems so trivial and so nonsensical in the grand scheme of things? I’d actually like to speak to somebody wealthy in hopes of perhaps getting the answer to that question answered.

The rich understand that money flows from ideas, and since ideas are limitless, money is limitless. However, that doesn’t mean all ideas are good ideas. Some ideas are Downright idiotic at worst and plain lunacy at best. Also, some people think that money makes them invincible. The universe has a way of humbling you up really quickly. Murphy’s law is real and anything that can go wrong sometimes does. Sometimes, that means that your life gets taken. Having wealth doesn't guarantee good judgment nor does it grant immunity from the consequences of one's actions.

I like to say that he who restrains his desires is always rich. In other words, you can only become rich through the things that you don’t desire. Because ultimately a rich man is nothing but a poor man with money.  Money is just as valuable as time so you should spend both of them shits wisely. In most circumstances, your time is worth more than money. Time is limited and you don’t get any of it back. So, manage it wisely and spare yourselves the loose change and the loose ends.
